Abstract
The increasing penetration of nonlinear loads in modern distribution networks has intensified challenges related to reactive power demand, voltage instability and overall power quality degradation. These issues necessitate the deployment of fast, controllable and reliable compensation devices capable of maintaining stable operating condition under dynamic load variation. Load variation could help to design a better configuration for experimental implementation. This paper presents comprehensive and unified methodology for the design, simulation and experimental implementation of a Static Synchronous Compensator (STATCOM) intended for power factor improvement in distribution systems. The proposed STATCOM is simulated in MATLAB/Simulink under various loading scenarios, including nonlinear loads, and sudden reactive power changes. This simulation can prove the results. Experimental results demonstrate significant improvement in power factor, and reduction of reactive current. Reduction of reactive current plays a main rule in stabilization of power systems and distribution network. This paper can implementation in real world and improve power factor in distribution networks.
