Abstract

This paper presents harmonic analysis and harmonic filter design and selection for a hybrid cooling tower of a refinery plant. This study can extend to any industrial plant with many variable speed drives (VSD). In this industrial complex, variable speed drives are the total load of power transformers. The harmonic analysis for the system shows that harmonic elimination with passive filters is possible just for a certain current and power range. The studies show that ferro-resonance is encountered in the light loads. This phenomenon creates overvoltages in the network and damages the equipment. The purpose of this paper is to express important points in the design or selection of voltage harmonic filters in industrial networks with large non-linear loads.
